Preparation and tips for travelling in your off-road caravan
While it is a great deal of fun to search through all the different off-road caravans for sale, and to discuss the ins and outs and different features of the models available, the day will come when you will actually have to navigate your way on an off-road trail with a caravan hitched to your 4×4. That is why we have compiled a few hints and tips to help you enjoy a smooth drive while on the trail, and to make sure your 4×4 and caravan come out in one piece at the other end.
When travelling on a rough and corrugated off-road trail, reduce your 4×4’s tyre pressure and speed. As a rule, your 4×4’s tyre pressures should be reduced by up to 20% of the usual highway pressure. Likewise, your road speed should also be sufficiently reduced. Extreme corrugations can cause shock absorbers to build up extreme heat, which will lead to eventual failure. Therefore, it is recommended to stop often and allow the shock absorbers to cool down, as this helps reduce the risk of premature failure.
Sand driving with your caravan
When driving on sand, reduce tyre pressure even further. Dependent on the sand conditions, such as whether you are navigating dunes or long stretches, you may need to drop your tyre pressure by as much as 35% from the highway running pressures. However, you also need to consider the vehicle load. If you ever get caught in sand, you might be able to compact the sand by reversing forward and backward over the sand. If it is early in the morning, dew may also help hold the sand together, making it a firmer base to drive on.
