Tips for taking 4×4 trailers off road
Did you know that, when you attempt extreme manoeuvres with a trailer in tow, such exploits could stretch the towbar and tow vehicle beyond their design limits? Certain extreme off-road manoeuvres could force the 4×4 trailer and vehicle to swivel at acute angles that they were not designed for. In fact, the engineering specification for tow balls states they have to be capable of handling 15-degree rotation below or above a horizontal line relative to the trailer. However, depending on the coupling design, you may theoretically be able to achieve more than this in certain situations.
Generally, if you venture beyond that point, especially when the 4×4 trailer is hanging down – such as when the vehicle traverses a crest – then the hinging effect is lost, and the two units effectively lock together. This transfers forces directly into the chassis of the vehicle and the frame of the trailer. This may not only have a dire effect on the rig itself, but on the tow ball and tow bar as well. The towbar could break, or its mounting points might be ripped from the chassis. On the extreme side, the tow ball could also be damaged or break off completely, usually at the narrowest part of the neck, just below the ball itself. In the worst case, when the rig is exiting a donga with very steep sides, you could end up with a situation where the trailer literally hangs on the ball, to the point where the trailer wheels are off the ground.
So how can you avoid these worst-case scenarios while towing your 4×4 trailer?
Off-roading with 4x4s usually involves venturing into the unknown. However, even when towing a proper off-road trailer with big wheels and appropriate tyres, there are still certain things you can do to minimise the risk to both yourself and your vehicles. A good tip to keep in mind when encountering a serious obstacle while towing a 4×4 trailer is to first investigate it on foot. If you have any doubts about whether the coupling between the tow vehicle and trailer could be bent or twisted beyond their limits, rather try an alternative route. Keep in mind that damage caused by this type of overloading does not always show immediately, and a catastrophic failure can occur much later, with disastrous consequences. It is better to avoid that altogether.
