Tips for Hiking Outdoors For the Whole Family aticle

Families keeping fit hiking in the open air

Keeping fit as a family is getting more difficult by the day. People are bombarded with new technology which keeps them indoors. Television, video games, smart phones, the latest hand held devices, computers and fascinating computer games keep families glued to their seats indoors. No one will argue that technological progress is actually a good thing, but it has affected people’s health in a negative way. Families should plan one day a week when they lock the doors and get out in the open air for some exercise. Smaller homes and backyards make it difficult to move around at home. Families should consider hiking outdoors; in this way they will not only get to know each other better, but also learn something along the way.

Hiking is a sport which does not require spending a lot of money on equipment. Therefore it is a marvelous sport to choose as an exercise for the whole family. However, a family will need to purchase only a few items for this activity. Although there are many excellent hiking shoes available on the market, you can use shoes that are in your cupboard, providing that the shoes have good treads and that they support the ankles. Bushes and twigs can tear the skin and therefore it is best to wear light clothing that covers the legs. These clothes might already be in the environs of the house. Apart from proper shoes and light clothing which does not overheat a person, it is important to remember getting water bottles for everyone.

It is important to consider hiking routes that are beneficial to every one’s health. There are days when it is so hot, that you can overheat, causing more damage than good. Then again, hiking is mostly a wonderful and healthy sport when you consider routes on shaded trails. It usually is cooler in the forest because of the shade provided by trees and also because there is usually a flow of air. If the temperature is high outdoors, it is vital to take in enough water. Most hiking trails offer natural resources beneficial to the whole family. A good trail will have a lot of trees and a rivulet or water stream. When it gets too hot, the family can cool of in the water and have fun together.

Younger children get overjoyed when hiking outdoors, while older children might not be as thrilled as the younger siblings. Engaging in a scavenger hunt along the hiking trail will divert the family’s focus from the exercise and create fun for the whole family. Usually there are many items common to an area that can be put on a list when engaging on a scavenger hunt. They can try and find different types of leaves, moss, tree mushrooms, ferns, colored rocks and anything else that the children consider worthy of mentioning on a list. Activities like these supply the children with amusement and enjoyment.
At first your family might think you are silly for suggesting hiking in the open air, but do not be sidetracked. Staying healthy with exercise, getting just enough sunlight and fresh air is recommended for good health. The family might be miserable if you start with hiking trails that have steep climbs and take too long to complete. Start with level routes and progress to more interesting hikes. As the family starts enjoying the activity, one can consider going for longer hikes. Soon you will have established a healthy family activity which builds relationships and improves the health of every one.
