Choosing the Right Camping Backpack

When camping is the activity you love, you are probably that person that gets into the outdoors with friends, family or other people or groups that share your interest. Children can become keen campers by learning from their family or by becoming a member of an organization like the Scouts. Of course there are different types of camping, for example some people enjoy heading out in a camper van, although others might argue that this is not true camping. Others are content when they roll out a sleeping bag inside a tent or even under the stars. If camping and hiking is your thing, then getting the right backpack for your adventures is essential. The wrong one could make your trip a disaster.

Making a person’s first camping trip a memorable one with the correct equipment, like a comfortable backpack, could mean that one is hooked for life. For many people who have tried camping, have ended up being so uncomfortable that they would be hard pressed to ever try it again. It would be unfortunate if it was all due to an uncomfortable backpack. An important lesson to learn is to never rush when you equip a first time camper. Don’t just set them up with the first old, spare equipment that you have lying around. Try and go out and buy them something especially for them that they excite them and they will be comfortable using. In this way you could be ensuring that you have them hooked for life.

It is important that the backpack you choose should be able to carry all your hiking requirements and still be a comfortable fit. Certainly, it is true that anything that needs to haul a hiker’s load will not be light and easy all the time, but it should be overall a comfortable experience. Choose a backpack that has a sturdy frame but is lightweight all the same. It should fit well on the length of your back and when standing on the floor, should not flop to the ground. Comfort is just as important as weight. Check for straps and buckles that allow you to fasten the backpack snuggly to your body. And when purchasing for a child, make sure the pack is not too big for their body.

As you consider a backpack, look also for the possibilities of carrying along any additions that you may want to add to the pack. Many packs come with cleverly designed straps for the addition of a sleeping bag or blanket. This can be strapped onto the outside of the pack allowing you to use the interior for other things. Although these may be helpful additions, check that they are low on the pack. Carrying extra weight too high up on the backpack, might mean a child will be top heavy and unstable as they walk. This could lead to a nasty fall as they hike up an incline and topple over backward. You need to choose a backpack that shares the carrying load evenly and securely.

It may be that you prefer to visit your local store to purchase your new camping equipment. It does allow you to make sure that the quality and the fit it right for you. This is not a bad idea. However, consider checking online to be sure that you are getting the best deal. If you have already researched what you want from a backpack, it may be possible for you to source it online and even get a much better price. Look for an online company that allows for a returns policy. Should the backpack not be right for you or your child, you would then have the option of returning it.
