South Africans love to camp by the coast when it is warm, but when the winter months roll by, we like to head to the bush. Those who are brave enough to take on the cold will even actively seek out the best places to enjoy the limited snowfall our country is blessed with every year. Here are a few of our specially selected South African campsites to visit this winter:
Golden Gate Highlands National Park – Free State
This is one of the best spots in South Africa to experience snowfall. While Golden Gate is often inundated with visitors during the warm summer months, the winter chill tends to keep non-hard-core campers away, so it is not unusual to have a whole campsite to yourself. If you are worried about the cold, you can cosy up in your Echo 4×4 Chobe Tec off-road caravan, built to sleep up to four adults in well-isolated comfort. Built on the Echo 6 chassis, it makes this Chobe caravan the most versatile caravan in our range, perfect for beating off the cold and cuddling up for a warm night in the bush.
Tshipise – Limpopo
“Tshipise” actually translates to “something warm”. As the name suggests, this region enjoys a year-round sunny climate. It is little wonder it is a favourite winter camping destination among South Africans. Another reason behind its popularity is that Tshipise is situated close to the Kruger National Park, and is particularly popular among travellers en route from and to Zimbabwe. Make sure you have the correct under-body protection to keep your 4×4 in good shape as you navigate the rocky terrain of the region. Have a look at our extensive line of accessories to make your stop in Tshipise even more enjoyable.
Suni Pass and Underberg – KwaZulu-Natal
The charming Drakensberg villages of Himeville and Underberg are amazing bases from which to embark on 4×4 trips up Sani Pass, where you are all but assured of seeing snowfall during the right time of year. This is the perfect chance to break in your luxurious Namib TC off-road caravan. You will pass several camping spots, but to really enjoy the snow at the top of the pass to its fullest, book yourself a camping spot at Sani Mountain Lodge.
Lower Sabie Rest Camp – Mpumalanga
For those in search of a bush experience, this is one of the Kruger park’s most popular rest camps, and with good reason. Situated on the banks of the Sabie River, one of the Kruger’s few rivers that flow all year round, it is one of the best spots for fantastic game-spotting opportunities.
